This Thursday, May 21st, a new Lidl Wine Tour hits the stores, poised to engage, uplift and, of course, refresh all wine lovers. A few of my favourites are below. The whites are particuarly good and demonstrate the wonderful diversity of dry whites currently available in Italy and Spain. In addition to the reds below, there are also several Portuguese reds which are full of flavour and excellent value for money.
Soave Classico Corte Allodola - £6.99 - I often find Soave a little underwhelming but this is an excellent example of the wave of improved quality sweeping the region.
Gruner Veltliner Alto Adige - £8.49 - Gruner Veltliner (GV) is normally associated with Austria, but this is a beautiful example from north-east Italy. As appetising and refreshing as wine can get.
Zibibbo duca di Castelmonte - £7.49 - I love this - fresh, dry, fruity and it even tastes of grapes!
Falanghina Beneventano - £7.99 - Classy, modern Italian white - understated and very moreish.
Godello Monterrei - £7.99 - Delicious appetising Spanish dry white - imagine it with plate loads of Pintxos in San Sebastian……
Albarino Barrica Salneval - £8.49 - Unusual, oak-aged Albariño, well-balanced and worth a try.
Vina Carles Priorat Crianza - £7.99 - A red that Lidl has had consistent success with, full-bodied and with lovely freshness to balance the rich fruit.
Bolgheri Medici Riccardi - £13.99 - Really classy Italian red - pricey, but wines from Bolgheri are normally much more expensive than this, so well worth a try.
Espera Primitivo Puglia - £7.99 - Bold, richly flavoured red in a style that Italy has come to specialise in. Perfect with the barbecue.
Keep well…….and refreshed!
