30th August - Ha'penny Cup
The Pin Mill Sailing Club Ha’penny Cup challenge on Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August, will be open to members of other local sailing clubs this year. You are therefore urged to take part to defend the honour of our Club.
The Ha’penny Cup Challenge is a fun event - definitely NOT a race.
Any yacht of any size or shape, with any number of crew,* may take part and, whether you are sailing a dinghy or an ocean racer, you will have an equal chance of winning.
The Ha’penny Cup itself can be won only by a PMSC member but a new award, “The Farthing Challenge Cup,” will be presented to the winning non-PMSC member.
There will be a BBQ and prizegiving at the Club from 7 p.m. on the 30th August.
2). Vessels must start at any time between 10.00 and 10.30 a.m. on Monday, 30th August. The course will be announced by email on the evening before the event but will start and finish at the Pin Mill Sailing Club Start Line.
3). Before crossing the line, skippers must call the event organiser, Graeme Hammond, on 07958 533784, or “Ha’penny Cup Control” on Channel 72 and declare their anticipated time on-course. They will be honour-bound to record their accurate start and finish times and must declare them on completing the course. The winner will be the boat with an actual time closest to its predicted time on course.
4}. You must be sailing for the entire time on course. You may NOT use your engine (including the five minutes before your start), heave to, deviate from track by more than 90 degrees, or alter your sail plan (e.g. reef or shorten sails, or raise additional sails), except for safety reasons. You may, however, employ slowing-down tactics. Again, you will be honour-bound to abide by these rules.
* PLEASE NOTE: In order to promote the sport of sailing, skippers are encouraged to include an under-18, or a first-time sailor, as a member of their crew for the event. They will be allowed to add or subtract two minutes to or from their actual time, if they have a pre-declared and named under-18 or non-sailing member on board.
